Sarasota County is rebuilding, but recovery isn’t reaching everyone. Four devastating hurricanes followed a brutal pandemic, and our most vulnerable neighborhoods are still struggling. The Newtown Family Center is changing that. We’re a vital, collective impact project focused on Sarasota’s only Racially and Ethnically Concentrated Area of Poverty (HUD R/ECAP zone)—Newtown.
Why Newtown?
Decades of social, health, and economic disparities have left communities like Newtown uniquely vulnerable. Beyond the immediate damage of recent disasters, residents face generational trauma, pervasive poverty, limited healthcare access, food deserts, housing shortages, and transportation barriers. These aren’t just inconveniences; they’re roadblocks to recovery and lasting well-being. These pre-existing challenges drastically impede recovery, prolonging suffering and hindering true resilience.
Why Now?

The three years of back-to-back storms preceded by the pandemic have devastated our community, adding additional trauma and stress to families already suffering from extreme poverty and lack of resources. As Sarasota continues to experience explosive luxurious growth, our families lack bare necessities like healthcare, food, clothing, safe housing, after-school activities, summer programs, and mentors.
The Newtown Family Center is more than just a building. It’s a strategic investment in the foundational strength of families and the enduring resilience of an entire community. This public facility, led by community leaders and co-designed by residents, directly addresses the unmet needs exacerbated by recent disasters.
We’re benefiting the lowest-income individuals in our county, where children are growing up facing these challenges.
How?
By building a community that cares for itself through integrated family support, essential healthcare, and educational opportunities. The one-stop shop equips Newtown residents with the resources and stability needed to build self-reliance to not just survive, but to thrive. This vibrant hub of connection and trust brings place-based services to residents shared by staff recruited from Newtown’s Neighborhood Experts.
