The Purpose:

Supporting Families, Strengthening Community

The Newtown Family Center is a place-based initiative founded on a clear and compelling purpose: to empower families to transition from merely surviving to genuinely thriving, thereby mitigating the profound effects of poverty on our children and strengthening our community’s ability to withstand and recover from catastrophic events.

We envision a truly flourishing community where every family is supported, every child is nurtured, and every individual has equitable access to the resources needed to reach their full potential through self-sufficiency, even in the face of unforeseen challenges like hurricanes or public health crises.

Our model is inspired by the established quality standards and best practices of leading organizations dedicated to family well-being, including our partners, the Florida Coalition for Children and Thriving Families, Safer Children.

Modeled after successful Family Resource Centers across the country, we embody a proven concept meticulously designed to provide Information, resources, navigation, and referrals, ensuring that families can access timely, relevant, and trusted access to internal and external supports.

  • Provide a welcoming and accessible hub: We are building a single, trusted location where families can access a comprehensive range of support services, empowering our community to overcome generational trauma and build enduring resilience against all forms of adversity, from economic hardship to natural disasters.
  • Strengthen family protective factors: Central to our mission is the cultivation of five essential Protective Factors that research consistently shows increase family stability, enhance child development, reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect, and are crucial for navigating unforeseen hardships:
    • Parental Resilience: Fostering the ability of parents to cope with stress, adversity, and the profound disruptions caused by events like hurricanes or public health emergencies.
    • Social Connections: Building robust networks of support for families within the community, providing vital lifelines and collective strength during crises.
    • Concrete Support in Times of Need: Ensuring families have immediate and sustained access to essential resources like housing, childcare, food, and emergency supplies, especially when facing the aftermath of a catastrophic event.
    • Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development: Equipping parents with the understanding and skills to nurture their children’s healthy growth, even amidst instability, and to recognize and address the developmental impacts of trauma.
  • Offer comprehensive and integrated services: We address the diverse and evolving needs of families, from early childhood development and educational support to economic empowerment, health and wellness programs, and crisis intervention, all designed with a lens of preparedness and recovery.
  • Foster community engagement and leadership: We believe in empowering Newtown residents to actively participate in shaping the programs and services that directly serve them, fostering true community ownership and self-reliance in preparing for and responding to challenges.
  • Promote collaboration and partnerships: We work hand-in-hand with existing community organizations, government agencies, and local stakeholders to maximize access and impact and ensure a cohesive network of support, vital for coordinated disaster response and long-term recovery efforts.
